IL 3. Adas Soup (Israeli Red Lentil Soup)

Bean: Red lentils (masoor dal)

🍲 FULL POT RECIPE (1 lb red lentils)

Ingredients — Bean Pot

  • 1 lb red lentils • 8 cups water • 1 can coconut milk (or 1½ cups powdered coconut milk reconstituted) • 1–2 cups dehydrated vegetable mix OR 3 cups fresh diced vegetables (onion, carrot, celery, tomato) • 1½ tsp turmeric • 1½ tsp salt • 1 tsp black pepper • 1 tbsp garlic (fresh or powdered) • 1 tbsp ginger (fresh or powdered) • 1–2 tsp mild chili flakes (optional) • 1 tsp cumin

Tempering (Tadka)

  • 2 tbsp oil • 1 tsp mustard seeds • 1 tsp cumin seeds • 1 small onion, sliced (or ½ cup dehydrated onions)

Ingredients — Grain Pot

  • 1.5 lb rice • 0.5 lb barley • 12 cups water • 1 tsp salt

🔥 Instructions — Full Pot

Pot 1: Adas Soup

  1. Rinse lentils until water runs mostly clear.
  2. Add lentils, water, turmeric, salt, pepper, garlic, ginger, cumin, and vegetables.
  3. Simmer 25–30 minutes until soft and creamy.
  4. Stir in coconut milk and simmer 10 more minutes.
  5. Heat oil → add mustard seeds, cumin, and onions.
  6. When fragrant, pour tempering into the soup.
  7. Simmer 5 more minutes.

Pot 2: Rice + Barley + Quinoa

Serve

  • Spoon adas over rice/barley. • Add fresh herbs or sprouts.

🍲 QUARTER POT RECIPE (¼ lb red lentils)

Ingredients — Bean Pot

  • ¼ lb red lentils • 2 cups water • ½ cup coconut milk • ½ cup dehydrated veg OR ¾ cup fresh veg • ½ tsp turmeric • ½ tsp salt • ¼ tsp pepper • 1 tsp garlic • 1 tsp ginger • ¼ tsp cumin

Tempering

  • 1 tsp oil • ¼ tsp mustard seeds • ¼ tsp cumin • 2 tbsp onion

Grain Pot

  •  rice • barley • quinoa 3 cups water after 15 mintes add the quinoa and simmer until soft
